Japan Inflation Rate (Consumer Price Index)
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures changes in the prices of goods and services purchased by households in Japan. This page shows the year-over-year change of the nationwide CPI for three measures: headline (all items), core (all items less fresh food) and core-core (all items less fresh food and energy).
📖 How to read this indicator
Core CPI is the measure most often cited in Japan, because fresh food prices swing sharply with the weather. Core-core CPI also removes energy, so it is a better guide to underlying inflation driven by domestic demand and wages. When headline and core rise much faster than core-core, the price increase is mainly coming from energy or imported costs; when core-core itself stays high, inflation has spread more broadly across goods and services.

FAQ
What is the difference between core and core-core CPI in Japan?
Core CPI excludes fresh food from the headline index. Core-core CPI excludes both fresh food and energy, so it reflects underlying price trends with less influence from weather and commodity prices.
Who publishes Japan's CPI?
The Statistics Bureau of Japan (Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) publishes the CPI every month.
