Nikkei 225 (Nikkei Stock Average)

The Nikkei Stock Average (Nikkei 225) is a stock price index of 225 companies listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, calculated by Nikkei Inc. This page shows the average of the daily closing values for each month.

📖 How to read this indicator

The Nikkei 225 is a price-weighted index, so companies with high share prices have a larger influence than in the market-capitalization-weighted TOPIX. A weaker yen tends to support the index because it raises the yen value of exporters' overseas earnings. Monthly averages smooth out daily swings, so the figures differ from month-end closing values.
