Japan Current Account Balance

The current account records Japan's transactions with the rest of the world in goods, services and income. This page shows the monthly current account balance and three of its components: the goods trade balance (exports minus imports of goods), the services balance and primary income (mainly returns on overseas investments). Figures are not seasonally adjusted.

📖 How to read this indicator

Japan's current account has long been in surplus mainly because of primary income: dividends and interest from its large overseas assets more than offset trade deficits in years of high energy prices. Monthly figures have a seasonal pattern (for example, a weak trade balance in January), so compare a month with the same month a year earlier.

quiz FAQ

Why does Japan have a current account surplus even when it runs a trade deficit?

Japan earns large primary income from its overseas assets, such as dividends from foreign subsidiaries and interest on foreign bonds. This income has been larger than the deficits in goods and services trade.
